Know Him

I have started reading through 1st Samuel and have reached Hannah’s prayers after bringing Samuel to Eli to be dedicated to the service of the Lord. I can only imagine how heartbreaking this experience must have been – Hannah had been waiting for a son for so long and now she is leaving him. Yet, her prayer does not express brokenness – it exudes joy in the worship and praise of God. Reading through it, I am convicted by how solid her knowledge is of the character of God. She trust and worships the Lord because she knows Him personally and praises him for his attributes – his holiness, his uniqueness, his immutability, his strength, his protection, his sovereignty, his grace, his judgment, his knowledge, his upholding of the word, his authority over life and death, his faithfulness, his victory, his guidance…I could go on. And all in a prayer of just 10 verses. (I Samuel 2:1-10)

I pray that I might know God like Hannah, with such depth and in such a personal way. God is truly with her in her pain, her sacrifice and her joy. God used Hannah’s heart and her faith to produce a son, Samuel who will be a servant to God and a prophet for the nation of God. Her faith produced fruit.

Saturate yourself in the word of God that you might know him. Pray and worship God for who he is. Turn your sorrow into sacrifice, and serve the Lord with joy. This is the kind of woman of God that I want to be.

  1. As a child I can remember hearing this story for the first time. It didn't seem right to me for a mother to take her child and give him away. No matter if she had promised God she would give him to the Lord. We as parents do a similar thing when we dedicate our children to the Lord, but he gives us the child back and says raise this child to love me and to follow my leading. We as children of the Lord can do likewise.
